Bhubaneswar
The International Symposium on Audiological Medicine- 2011 is scheduled to be held at Heritage city of Bhubaneswar, the capital of Orissa, on the eastern shore of India. Bhubaneswar is known as the temple city. Truly, the Kesari Dynasty kings had built a city of more than five thousand temples. Even now, more than 100 temples stand majestically dotting the old town area. This is the place where the Kalinga War was fought, where the historical event that changed face of half the world. Kalinga war where the nation state got vanquished by the Asoka the terrible, metamorphosed the war lord into Asoka the Great. The sons of soil of Kalinga only knew freedom, the alternative to freedom was death, not subordination. The victor's heart was conquered by the scale of devastation and deaths. He became missionaries of kindness, spreading Buddhism across the globe. Bhubaneswar also has the rock cut caves in Khandagiri & Udaigiri where Jain saints sat in penance more than three thousand years ago. The natural zoo at Nandan Kanan is the breeding place for White Tigers.
Orissa ( Odisha )
The Indian State Odisha is on the eastern shore of India. It is an ancient land, spread over 150,000 square kilo meters area, with population of nearly fourty millions. Having 400 Km long coast line and large part covered by eastern Ghats mountain ranges, Orissa is picturesque. Aamong many rivers, it has the mighty Mahanadi large wild life santuries like Similipala & Bhitara Kanika are sight for sore eyes. Huge Chilika lake spread over 1100 square kilo meter area, is famous for its Iravadi Dolphins and migrating birds like Siberian cranes. The inhabitants are called Odia. The term Odia comes from the word Udra, meaning a farmer. Odisha the modern name for Kalinga which finds mention in 5000 year old scriptures like Mahabharat. Thus Odisha started exporting its rich culture which includes teaching half the world its etiquette of "Namaskar ; bowing from waist downward with folded hands" , unique style of Architecture seen in the temple construction in Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia etc. Oriya culinary habit of "Rice & Fish " is spread till Japan. There is much more to Orissa, that can give a visitor unforgettable memories.
Jagannath Temple, Puri & Sun Temple, Konark
When India got plunged into dark age due to fighting among religious cults like "Vaishnavas" , "Shaaktas", "Shaibas"; the Odia saints lead by its king got into the religious unification by creating the famous Jagannath Temple at Puri. The three deities Balabhadra representing "Shiva", "Subhadra" representing "Shakti" and "Jagannath" representing "Vishnu" was the symbol of Indian Unification. Such farsighted & clever acts of diplomacy could bind the country together for centuries. The Konark sun temple is another famous monument worth visiting.
