Message from President
Mechanics, in the form of forces and displacements, at different scales pervade the universe. It exists as a phenomenon in nature and is also utilized by humans in achieving their objectives in various engineering fields. Applied Mechanics is a term used to understand mechanics at different length and time scales, and use this understanding to design, build, and control several systems of utility in the broad fields of engineering. Hence, it encompasses the broad fields of mechanical engineering, civil engineering, aerospace engineering, ocean engineering, materials engineering, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, and computational engineering.
A Society of Applied Mechanics is a forum that tries to bring together professionals of various types, disciplines, and ages, together within a common platform so that they mutually inspire, encourage, and learn to dream and achieve several human objectives projected for the current and future well-being of the mankind. A society that helps in the pursuit of the above objectives in the geographical and cultural context of India, is the Indian Society for Applied Mechanics (ISAM).
ISAM was formally registered under the Society Registration Act in 2016 with its and by-laws. The first major activity of the society has been in disseminating new scientific findings. The society has organized seven national conferences and six theme-specific workshops so far. Some recorded lectures are available on our YouTube channel. These activities have helped bring out special journal publications and conference proceedings in SCI and Scopus-indexed international journals, from selected articles in its conferences. To date, six such special journal issues and four conference proceedings have been published by the society. As a third major activity, keeping in view the 17 goals of the United Nations plan for sustainable development and the Indian employment scenario, the society has been encouraging entrepreneurial activities under the theme of “frugal engineering”. Of late, to keep young minds enthused about mechanics with day-to-day applications, we have just begun a popular mechanics lecture series.
ISAM currently has more than 400 members comprising students, faculty, and scientists working in various academic institutions and research laboratories, and colleagues from industries working across various disciplines of engineering. Its membership is open to any person interested in the broad objectives of ISAM. The society is geographically operational in India, but its vision is universally pervading. It continues to generate discussions and debates, so that the strong technical expertise that it has, is relevant to the living needs of a common man on the ground, as well as the explorations of human beings into outer space or the deep seas.
I strongly encourage any visitor to this website to become a member of ISAM either as a student member, life member, institutional member, or corporate member. Join us and participate in this adventurous and exciting journey.
Best wishes,
President, ISAM
Professor, IIT Madras
