Frugal Engineering

Frugal Initiatives for Technical Interventions in Rural India (FITIRI) is an initiative by the Indian Society for Applied Mechanics (ISAM) to channel the technical expertise of academicians, researchers, engineers, and students working in the broad area of Applied Mechanics and promote rural products to identify challenges and to innovate effective solutions for several problems faced by a common man in the country. Several sessions in the INCAM conferences and periodic workshops are hosted by ISAM.

All technical institutions are engaged in social awareness programs such as the National Service Scheme (NSS) and Unnat Bharath Abhiyan (UBA). Technical institutions are also mandated to increase the social awareness of their students in several ways. Teaching specialized courses relating to social awareness and intervention is necessary for increasing the societal responsibility of the students. These workshops are intended to help aspiring teachers in technical institutions teach courses related to social awareness, intervention, and social entrepreneurship. Experts who have been teaching similar courses across the country will share their experience with the participants and will also help them to initiate teaching of similar courses in their respective institutions. One such initiative is the Collaborative Innovation for Promoting Rural Abundance (CIPRA).
